BAND DIRECTOR UPDATE updated 12/13/2010
Hello everyone,

Thank you to all students for the wonderful performances provided this past weekend for our Prism Concert.  I was pleased, overall, with the quality of performances.  We definitely have some great musical things happening in our Fine Arts Department!

Scale passoffs are due by 5:00pm on Tuesday, December 14th.  Grades are completely updated.  Remember that attempts at the scales does NOT equal passing off the scale.  Students must be able to play the scale without error to be passed.

Final exams begin with Symphonic Band Wednesday, Concert Band Thursday, and Wind Ensemble Friday.  Final exams for all classes are as follows:

     1. Concerts F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, and Gb played in the quarter/eighth pattern as found in "Foundations for Superior Performance".  To meet the standard, students in Wind Ensemble should play all scales in less than 1 minute and Symphonic/Concert Bands in less than 2 minutes.  Students will also be graded on tone quality, steadiness of tempo/rhythm, and note accuracy.

     2.  Sight-reading exercise.  The sight-reading exercise will be graded based on accuracy of notes/rhythms, tone, dynamic contrast, and steady tempo.  Students will be given a 30 second study period.  The tempo for the selection will be given at the beginning of the study session and again before the playing of the selection.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at any time.  I wish you and your family a happy and prosperous holiday season.

Sincerely,

Mr. Stanton

UPDATE 2
Parents and students,

Last week we announced to the band students about the band program sponsoring a child in a family in need.  We know that times are hard on all families, but we are asking for donations of either cash (to be used to purchase items) or items listed later in this e-mail.  We are sponsoring a 14 year old boy.  The following is a list of needs and wants:

NEEDS:
Socks (shoe size is 8), Pants (36x30), Shirts (2XL Mens), Large Boxers, Mechanical Pencils

WANTS:
Skateboard, rollerblades, PS2 Guitar Hero, watch, Axe spray

I appreciate your gifts for this child.  We hope to make this a special holiday season for this child and his family through our generous giving.  Thank you to our families that have already donated.  Please note that we must have all gifts by this Friday, December 10th.

Thanks,

Mr. Stanton

JAZZ BAND UPDATE updated 12/13/2010

Good morning Student and Parent Jazzers,

I've attached a flyer announcing the Bow Cutting event for the new Magnet facility (old Elementary school). I immediately thought this would be a great opportunity for our jazz band to be featured before the actual event start. Exposure is tremendously important to not only the reputation of the jazz band but for the survival of our music program. Who knows, maybe we can make jazz band a class in the near future.

This event will be held on the Tuesday we get back from the break; January 4, 2011 at 4pm. The jazz band will have to perform before the actual event, which means we'll start performing at 3:15 and be done at 4pm.

I want to take a vote (students AND parents) on whether or not you want to perform for this event. I need your votes by THIS Wednesday! If you do not submit a vote, it will count as a "yes" vote.

Mr. Christopher A. Coleman
Jazz Band Director
Rockdale County High School

See you jazzers tomorrow!

FUNDRAISER UPDATES  11/17/2010
Hello Band Parents and Students,

Hello Parents and Students,

Our Florida Indian River Groves (FIRG) fruit sale fundraiser has ended. We had outstanding participation. Here's a big THANK YOU! to all who submitted orders. The submission exceeded expectations for this year's sale. From the smallest to the largest order, all sales helped the band surpass our fundraiser goal.

- Special recognition to Vander Harris and family with a $505 order - Outstanding!
- Who knew the Rutledge's ($434) order would have been edged :>)
- Thanks to Emily Miller's and John Martin's families with orders over $300.

And so many more....

We will have 267 cartons of fruit delivered to our school. 6 additional boxes will be direct shipped across the county. FIRG has given me a 3 week window for our school's delivery - November 29th through Decenber 17th (weekends excluded). As soon as we have the final delivery date and time, I will get it out immediately.

We will need muscle to unload the truck and distribute the fruit Please let me know if you are willing to help with the distribution.

Thank you again to everyone for your support of all the RCHS Band Fall Fundraisers.
